Matcha Storage Guide: How to Keep It Fresh

Matcha is highly sensitive to light, oxygen, heat, and moisture. Without proper storage, its vibrant color and delicate aroma can fade quickly.

Here’s how to preserve its freshness, flavor, and color with a few simple steps.

Best Practice: Two-Stage Storage

Step 1
Transfer a portion of matcha into an airtight, opaque tea tin for daily use.

Step 2
Keep the rest tightly sealed in its original pouch, unopened, and store it in the fridge.

Only open the main pouch when the tin is completely empty. This reduces oxidation from repeated exposure.

Why Airtight + Lightproof Matters

Matcha degrades when exposed to air or light. That’s why tins are ideal—they block light and seal tight.

If using your own container, make sure it’s both airtight and opaque.

Always Refrigerate

Store both the tin and sealed pouch in the fridge.

But here’s a crucial tip:
Before opening cold matcha, let it sit at room temperature for about 5 minutes. Opening it too soon can cause a sudden intake of oxygen, which speeds up degradation.

High-Usage Exceptions

If you use matcha frequently—such as in cafés or high-volume home settings—and finish the tin within 1–2 weeks, you can be more flexible. After each use, it’s fine to leave the container out for a short time (with the lid closed) before returning it to the fridge. The risk of oxidation is much lower when the turnover is fast.

Personal Note

I use matcha regularly. I usually take it straight from the fridge, let it warm slightly while preparing tools and water, scoop quickly, then reseal and return it immediately.

Whether for personal or professional use, matcha storage is all about reducing exposure and working with your rhythm of use.
